Registered Nurse-Oncology Clinic
Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing
What are the roles and responsibilities in your current position?
Administration of chemotherapy, monitor patients during treatments. Assess and identify chemotherapy side effects and reactions throughout their treatment cycles. Assess and insert IV sites, monitor and access central venous access devices. Monitor vital signs
What barriers did you have to overcome to succeed?
A major barrier I experienced was not knowing which field of nursing I was passionate about after graduating from University. I started my nursing career in general medicine, transferred to emergency care, then intensive care until finally obtaining a position in the Oncology clinic. In between working in different departments I applied for positions in Labour and Delivery, Pediatrics, Oncology, but was not considered because I had not completed specialized courses for these areas of nursing. I eventually completed the necessary courses to be considered for a position in the Oncology Clinic.
What is your advice for healthcare students?
The beauty of healthcare is that there is an endless number of different scopes of practice. If you find yourself unfulfilled working in a certain role or department don’t be afraid to take a chance on enrolling in a new course or applying for a position in a different scope of practice.
